Media's Influence on Youth Today

"We are playing with the lives of our youth, and ultimately our future."

Listen to this Commentary!

By Nneka Obiekwe

The media is such a powerful tool; its influences are used to mold the thoughts and views of our rather vulnerable minds or in the case of our youth today- desensitize the way we perceive serious issues. It has become successful in making me immune to problems such as, sex, drugs, and violence. For example, music videos are overflowing with half- naked girls who send messages that ignore self respect, and reflect low self esteem. despite what we want to believe, these girls are role models for our younger generation, and are influencing our youth. It is pretty pathetic when someone can tell me that a sixteen year old girl is pregnant, without me even raising an eyebrow. But, hey, look on the bright side the box office is profiting, right? Wrong.

We are playing with the lives of our youth, and ultimately our future. I find it humorous how the adult population can label the younger generation as violent druggies, and floozies. Yet, grown ups are the manufacturers of our "revealing" and "gang related" clothes. Clearly the future of the younger generation is taking a back seat on adults' top priority list.
