Jumping On the Gay Bandwagon

"It took time and hard work for me to earn acceptance, so I'm offended that now being gay is "cool". Maybe I'd rather be straight."

Listen to this Commentary!

By Jhavia Etheridge

My friend and I are at a local shopping center, grabbing some food after work. All around me I see dozens of black girls walking around with rainbow accessories in various places. At first I smile, happy to see other lesbians out and proud and comfortable with their sexuality. But that soon subsides as I start to notice some other things.

Something is wrong here. It's as if someone came in and dropped an overabundance of young black lesbians in the middle of downtown Atlanta.

Lately I've been feeling like my sexuality has been reduced to a trend. I think many of these girls are merely experimenting, rushing to put a label on themselves. Or maybe they feel that sex with a female is safer, since there's no risk of pregnancy.

Whatever the case, I don't like the idea of my sexuality being the craze right now. First it was pink tees, now its same-sex relationships. It took time and hard work for me to earn acceptance, so I'm offended that now being gay is "cool." Maybe I'd rather be straight.
