Disrespect is the New Chivalry

"It seems like, for many guys in my generation, disrespect has become the new chivalry."

By Alana Germany

Listen to this Commentary!

Youth Radio's Alana Germany is fed up with the disrespect men have for women. She compares the actions of young men today to those of her mothers past. "My mom says, when she was growing up, politeness was automatic."

It seems like, for many guys in my generation, disrespect has become the new chivalry.

Most of the time, guys approach girls as if they were hailing a cab--hollering “AY AY wait a minute” as they swing their arms wildly though the air.

In my 18 years on the planet, I’ve heard it all… “Hey sexy! Come here!” or my personal favorite, “How you doin’ chocolate?”

My mom says, when she was growing up, politeness was automatic. It was everywhere, from TV to movies, and especially music. I’ve been wondering what caused this shift in the way guys woo women?

I think it all comes down to what we’re taught. So to all the dudes of the universe, listen up:

Lesson one: If you see a girl on the street and you want to talk to her, try a simple “hello”

Lesson two: Don’t flail you arms and yell at girls to get their attention—you just look like an idiot.

And finally lesson three: Just because you don’t know a girls name, doesn’t me you can call her whatever you want—not sexy and definitely not chocolate.
