Being Short

"I was always the one made fun of because of my size."

Listen to this Commentary!

By Emily Greenwell

Ladies and Gentlemen, it is time to face the facts. I am Short.

I have never been the starring point guard on a basketball team, I don’t have to duck my head to walk through doorways, and yes, I still have to climb on the counter to reach that one bowl on the top of the refrigerator.

I stand at a massive 5 foot, 1 and _ inch, at age 16. I was the shortest one in my grade until middle school—then I was the second shortest. That’s almost worse. Who remembers second place??

Even though I am not the very shortest anymore, I was always the one made fun of because of my size. It’s not just the mean bullies either. Even good friends will mock me.

I know that there are remedies for not looking so short—wearing heels, stuffing shoes with toilet paper, always standing uphill—but I don’t worry about it that much. Being short isn’t such a problem that I need to change my lifestyle. Besides, I will always win the limbo contest….
