Bopper Nation

"The thought of having a fourteen-year-old girl on my arm is far from my idea of romance."

Listen to this Commentary!

By Pendarvis Harshaw

Back in the day Youth Radio's Pendarvis Harshaw saw girls his age infatuated with older boys. Now as a young adult, he discusses how his age status is making him the center of attention among the "boppers." "I’ve made the hero’s journey from being overlooked by younger women with mature attitudes, to being the interest of the entire bopper nation."

Back in my 7th grade days, I couldn’t get enough of the power-gorgeous young women in my classes. I would watch them pass by riding shot-gun with high school kats, while I sat at the bus stop in a thin sweater.

Now it all flips like acrobats. I’m 18; I’ve made the hero’s journey from being overlooked by younger women with mature attitudes, to being the interest of the entire bopper nation.

For the vast majority of my audience who are unaware of the definition of a bopper, I shall be your Sheppard: officially the term stems from “teeny bopper”. Presently, we’ve abbreviated the title to the more-free flowing term “bopper.”

And now that I’m on the receiving end of bopper attention, it’s evident the ‘Promised Land’ isn’t all it's made up to be. I realized this recently when a young woman accosted me. But the thought of having a fourteen-year-old girl on my arm is far from my idea of romance.

My message to every last one of the little sisters of the world, from the position of that older male, give that young man sitting next to you at the bus stop a chance. He might grow up to be me one day.
