Let Me Choose My Beliefs

"It was borderline traumatizing to find out maybe what I’d been believing wasn’t true."

Listen to this Commentary!

By Brandon McFarland

Youth Radio's Brandon McFarland discusses his experiences with pro-evolution teachers. "Maybe I wouldn’t care about the issue as much if I hadn’t had run-ins with pro-evolution teachers who told me flat out what I believe was wrong."

Evolution, creationism, and intelligent design have one thing in common: Faith.

None of these ideas can stand without people who believe them to be true, despite lack of visible and tangible evidence.

I’d never thought I’d say I’m riding for Bush on anything. I’m Black and a Californian, but on this issue, I’m Christian first. Maybe I wouldn’t care about the issue as much if I hadn’t had run-ins with pro-evolution teachers who told me flat out what I believe was wrong.

This one science teacher in junior high was going on and on about evolution, but something about the way he was teaching it gave me a funny feeling. Instead of saying “the theory of evolution” he said “the truth about how life began.” It was borderline traumatizing to find out maybe what I’d been believing wasn’t true. I’d rather have a teacher tell me, these other belief systems are out there along with mine. And let me decide which story I want to choose for myself.
