Teach Me to Drive!

"In the past, I’ve had a few bad driving experiences..."

By Monica Magaña
April 8, 2007

Listen to this Commentary!

Like most 16-year-olds, Youth Radio's Monica Magaña is dying to learn how to drive. But her parents refuse to teach her after she got in an accident almost three years ago. Monica reflects on her current driving status. (April 8 on KCBS)

I’m 16 yrs old, and like any other teen, I would love to have my own car and license. But for me, having my own car is not an option...not because of the financial hardship, but simply because I don’t know how. My parents refuse to teach me.

In the past, I’ve had a few bad driving experiences. The worst one happened when I was thirteen. My neighbor Maria suggested that I learn how to drive and took me to an empty parking lot to practice. Quickly, I felt confident enough to take it to the next level...“the streets.”

I wasn’t ready. I ran over a tree.

With that two incident on my record, every time I’ve asked my parents to let me drive, they’re like “NO!” But I have alternative choices, like my friends, and a sister, who are willing to get in a car with me. And if I do say so myself, I’m getting better – after all, I haven’t run over anything or anyone in the last week.
