C-C-C-Coffee!

"For my friends, coffee is almost as essential as oxygen. "

By Ankitha Bharadwaj

Listen to this Commentary!

Youth Radio's Ankitha Bharadwaj notices a new trend with her peers, more and more high school students are lining up for coffee at a local Starbucks. She say's her schoolmates are turning to caffeine to fight sleep and keep their bodies functioning comfortably. Instead of drinking coffee daily, Ankitha would rather turn to fruit.

There’s a popular adult accessory that’s become a must-have among teens. It’s that good ole cuppa joe.

No matter what time of day, the Starbucks in front of my high school is always jam-packed with briefcase-carrying business people and poetry-reading hipsters. But recently, high schoolers have been getting in on the action too.

As companies like Starbucks diversify their drinks with sweeter and fruitier flavors, more teens are getting hooked on that sweet combo of sugar and caffeine. And that’s not the only reason. Drinking coffee is one of the most accessible adult behaviors for teens to imitate.

For my friends, coffee is almost as essential as oxygen. If they don’t get their daily dose, they complain about headaches and body pains. And with college acceptance becoming more competitive, many high school students turn to coffee for an edge on the academic battlefield.

With all the stress in my life, I’ve found healthy alternatives to coffee for my daily pick-me-up. I find an apple a day keeps the sleepiness away.
