Shooting is the New Fighting

"This ain’t the wild wild west no matter how badly some wish it were."

By Mike Ginsburg

Listen to this Commentary!

Youth Radio's Mike Ginsburg has recently noticed a disturbing trend among violent teenagers in the bay area. He feels that his generation has turned to gun violence as a way to solve personal issues rather than using their own fists and hands.

My plea to the world, my home, the bay, put up your fists and fight like a man.

I’m Mike Ginsburg with a commentary from Youth Radio.

I know it seems like I’m advocating violence, but hear me out. Recently, an 18 year old was shot numerous times inside the busy Metreon in downtown San Francisco. His killer was 15, a young adult who reportedly opened fire after a brief argument over not moving fast enough on the escalator. I called the suspect a young adult. Most adults would probably just call him a boy, but sadly teens are growing up thinking pulling a trigger makes you a man. Shooting is the new fighting and it feels too late for change.

This ain’t the wild wild west no matter how badly some wish it were. We’re talking about taking somone’s life over street corner arguments or a ride up the escalator.

So can we lose our fixation with the wild west and maybe slip back to a different fighting era, like the days of bare knuckle boxing in the early 1900’s or even the rumbles of the 60’s and 70’s, "Warriors" style. That way, there’s a lot less pain and grief and more of the guts and glory we envision
