Afro Man

Listen to this Commentary!

By Leon Sykes

My neighborhood in Oakland is pretty normal. I know everyone by name…except for this man the neighborhood kids call Afro Man.

I'm Leon Sykes with a commentary from Youth Radio.

He stands at about five foot eight. But if you include his four-foot Afro -- he stands about nine feet. He reminds me of a male version of Marge Simpson. I've NEVER seen Afro Man with short hair. One day, I actually asked him why he never cut his hair. He told me this story about when he was in his early twenties. He said his friends dared him not to cut his hair for a year. He liked the look so much…that he hasn't cut it since. To be honest, the Afro look works for him.

But his hairstyle is not the only reason why he's a neighborhood favorite. The thing I like most about him is seeing him jog down the street. It's more like he's speed walking - with his afro flopping all around his head. He's always watching out for the neighborhood kids and and telling these outrageous stories about his childhood adventures. I guess you could say we all look up to him. We should all get to know the Afro Man in our neighborhood because it's amazing what we can learn from our elders.

For Youth Radio I'm Leon Sykes.
