Girl Rules

"If you’re a female like me, there’s a long list of rules we supposedly have to follow to even be considered attractive."

Listen to this Commentary!

By Laura Okonokhua

Because of mainstream messages, girls today have an unwritten list of requirements to be considered feminine in today's society. Youth Radio's Laura Okonokhua tells us how she creates her own definition of being feminine.

If you’re a female like me, there’s a long list of rules we supposedly have to follow to even be considered attractive. Things like: no hair on your legs, no un-arched eyebrows, no nappy hair.

I wonder who created these standards. I'll be honest, I break the rules all the time: the only time you catch me shaving my legs is if I'm wearing a skirt or shorts. When winter comes, it's time for me to start wearing pants and I need to keep all the extra heat on my body. Anyway, no one is going to see my legs. And if they did, they might run - thinking I'm some sort of hairy monster. Seriously, I could care less. There are many things about me that make me attractive.

I have friends who agree with me, but there are also people – guys and girls – who would make fun of me if they knew the reason my hair was in ponytail was because I woke up too late to brush it.

Being a woman comes with choices. It is every woman’s right to decide what they consider feminine. After all, who’s to say that not shaving your legs in the winter is manly? If you ask me, it’s actually kind of smart.
