With the job market still in the employers favor, many employees consider themselves lucky to have a job. However, there are those who abuse their employers trust and pursue the five-finger discount at their own workplace. Youth Radio's Nyssa Daniels tells us what she thinks about employee theft.
Last year, it frustrated me I just couldn't get a job. Now I've finally managed to get one, which is good because I was a broke teenager. But this year, as working teen, I have new issues. There's something I just don't understand - why do people steal from their workplace? At my store, we get some of the best employee discounts I've seen. Plus, the work isn't hard, and they pay us well above minimum wage.
Yet our turnover rate is very high, in large part because people get fired for stealing! I say, why bite the hand that feeds you? I would never steal from my employer because I’m grateful they hired me. But apparently, not everyone thinks the way I do. A few months ago, one of our employees was fired for stealing an iPod. He claimed that his friend bought it and left it in the store. The managers, of course, saw through this flimsy story and fired him on the spot.
Given the job market today, it wouldn't surprise me to hear that the guy is still looking for a new job. I bet with all those paychecks he's missing out on, he could have gotten himself an iPod - the legitimate way.
