Sexual Discrimination

"Girls and boys should have a choice in what they want to do, regardless of their gender."

Listen to this Commentary!

By Chandria Ogburn

Sexual discrimination is a problem for both girls and boys.

As a girl who likes to play basketball, I often experience prejudice from many boy players. Most assume that since I'm a girl, I don't know anything about the game, and therefore am not a worthy teammate.

Boys experience similar pressures though, in other areas. For example, guys who want to join cheerleading squads or play the flute in the marching band get called "sissy" or "gay" by their peers.

To me, girls and boys should have a choice in what they want to do, regardless of their gender.

For Youth Radio, I'm Chandria Ogburn.
