I’m an American

"Don’t assume a person’s appearance defines who they are."

Listen to this Commentary!

By Michael Acuna

When somebody comes up to me and begins speaking in Spanish, I get mad because they assume I speak Spanish and grew up the way they did.

I’m a young man who happens to be is a first generation American. Although my parents are from Central and South America, I cannot speak any Spanish.

For six years I lived in an American boarding school. At fourteen I moved to DC and lived a typical urban lifestyle, playing basketball, listening to rap, things of that nature. Although I look Hispanic I am not. I’m an American. I can only associate myself with American things. So don’t assume a person’s appearance defines who they are.
