Sexual Harassment

"I have been dealing with sexual harassment since elementary school."

Listen to this Commentary!

By Sophie Simon-Ortiz

I am now known around my school as the girl everyone can talk to when they get sexually harassed.

I have been dealing with sexual harassment since elementary school. Last year, this harassment reached a whole other level. A boy who I had considered my friend since elementary school cornered me in a crowded classroom and touched me and said words I don’t wish to ever repeat.

A couple of days later I filed a report with school security. It didn’t take long for people at school to find out that I got him suspended for what he did. Since then, girls have come to me with their stories about this same guy harassing, touching, and threatening them.

On one hand it feels great to know that my classmates feel comfortable confiding in me about really personal and sometimes painful experiences.

The problem is, the majority of sexual harassment and sexual assault goes unreported because students don’t even know who to report it to. So, sometimes it sucks being the designated “defender” girl, but I guess someone’s gotta do it.
