The Driving Age

"I have been waiting for a long time to get my driver’s license at 16, but now I have to wait until I am 18."

By Dereje Solomon

The driving age in DC is unfair.

I am 15 years old. I have been waiting for a long time to get my driver’s license at 16, but now I have to wait until I am 18. I’m tired of waiting for the bus for hours and riding for another hour to school, when a car can get me there in 10 minutes. One time I was waiting for the bus, and had just gotten out of the shower. It was so cold the hair on my head was freezing.

The government raised the driving age because teens supposedly get into more accidents than older people. But I think every teen is responsible enough to handle a car. Instead of taking away our right to drive, the government should train teens to drive more safely.
