Confronting All Stereotypes

"I feel stereotypes are always disrespectful no matter if they are based on age, looks, or race."

Listen to this Commentary!

By Stanley Pauyo

You can’t truly see the person in front of you when you’re blinded by stereotypes.

Store owners seem to think that when a Latino or African American kid walks in a corner store, they’re going to shoplift. I’ve gone into stores and felt security guards watching me. They follow me and my friends through the aisles, pretending not to be tracking us, but we know they’re following us. They try to act nice and constantly say “may I help you” constantly because they want us to get out of the store.

I feel stereotypes are always disrespectful no matter if they are based on age, looks, or race. Martin Luther King Jr. had some good advice…people should judge not from what they see, but from the person within.
