Annoying Telemarketers

"The conversation always begins the same way."

Listen to this Commentary!

By Lauren Blassingame

What was once a quiet evening has now become a nightmare full of unpredictable phone calls.

It’s 7:00 p.m., and I’m just sitting down for dinner. Just as I draw my food towards my mouth I hear the ring of the telephone. When I pick up, the phone I don’t hear the voice of my friend Saundra Lewis, or my boyfriend Ron Gonzalez. Instead it’s the voice of a stranger. Someone that I have no interest in, or time to speak with. The conversation always begins the same way.

Um, Hi. This is Joe Shmo calling from such and such and such and such and I would like to offer you the chance of a lifetime.

The funny thing is that these people seem to be trying to sell me something that they either know little about themselves, or have no interest in. From that point on they have lost my interest as well, and I try to sell them on the fabrication that my mommy isn’t home. Hey, if they can divvy out exaggerated information I can stretch the truth a little bit too.
