Me and My Mom

"The separation we had in the past makes our connection very special."

Listen to this Commentary!

By Dereje Solomon

The separation between my mother and I began when I was two years old, when my mother left Ethiopia for the U.S.

Right after I was born my father died, and my mother didn’t know how to raise all nine of us kids alone. So she left Ethiopia to come to the U.S. to make money to send back home, so her kids could live a better life.

I didn’t know my mother so it was hard for me to miss her. My mom left me with my older married sister, and my sister was the one who raised me.

When I was eight years old, my mother brought me to America. At the time, I wasn’t really excited to come here. But I was happy to see and get to know my mother.

Now my mother and I have a very different relationship than any other mother and son. The separation we had in the past makes our connection very special. I never got the little kid treatment from her when I was small, so now she treats me like a golden boy, and I treat her like a queen.
