Father to Be

"Being a daily part of my child’s life is the most important thing in becoming the father I strive to be."

Listen to this Commentary!

By Jordan Monroe

I am a twenty-one year old African American male who is expecting a baby girl within the next month. It’s left me reflecting on the myth of black men being unwilling and unfit fathers.

It is true that there are situations where men, of all ethnicities, choose not to take care of their children. But there are often circumstances that make it impossible for many willing and caring men to be fathers, such as imprisonment, which now claims an alarming number of African American males.

For me, the reality of having a child has not completely set in. But I am at peace. I will not be a part of the urban epidemic of absent black fathers that has plagued so many families.

Just knowing I will be a father soon has already changed me in many ways. But I also know that being a father isn’t just about financial support. To me, being a daily part of my child’s life is the most important thing in becoming the father I strive to be.
