A's Look to Dominate the Competition in the 2nd Half
"There are many factors which hint to the A's having yet another great second half run."

Monday, July 19, 2004 --
During this current era of the Oakland Athletics’ franchise, the A’s have developed a reputation of stepping up their leve l of play after the All-Star Break. Over the past four years, the A's have compiled a savage 198-97 record in the second half. At times, the A's have seemed untouchable by the rest of league, as displayed by their record 20 game winning streak in 2002. This year looks to be no exception, as there are many factors which hint to the A's having yet another great second half run.
1) Eric Chavez
Before breaking his wrist in early June, sturdy third baseman, Eric
Chavez, had a team leading 13 homeruns. Since his recent return from the
disabled list, Chavez has been great on both offense and defense, going 10 for 24 in his return (.417).
2) Bobby Crosby
Rookie Bobby Crosby looks to have found his stride with the A’s- proving to be very solid at shortstop. Crosby’s currently the front runner for the American League Rookie of the Year, leading all American League rookies with 12 homers and 38 RBI.
3) Mark Mulder
Mark Mulder's performance thus far has to make him the favorite for the American League Cy Young, with a 13-2 record to go along a 3.21 ERA- proving to be one of the strongest pitchers in the league.
4) Barry Zito
The true Barry Zito is finally starting to emerge- evident in his past 2 starts that have been nothing short of stellar. On the July 11th game against the Cleveland Indians, he
went 7 innings and only gave up 2 earned runs. His next time at the plate, which was against the Chicago White Sox, Zito pitched 7 strong innings, only giving up 1 earned run to take home his 5th win of the year.
5) Tim Hudson
Starting pitcher Tim Hudson has been sidelined since June 25th with a strained oblique muscle; but he looks to return within the next 2-3 weeks. Before going down with his injury, he had a 7-3 record with an impressive 2.98 ERA. When he returns, he will most definitely provide a huge boost to the Athletics’ already impressive starting rotation.
6) Bullpen
The bullpen is hoping to contribute more to the team after a shaky first
half performance. Midseason acquisition, closer Octavio Dotel, has been
a great addition to the team - helping to solidify the bullpen,
converting 5-of-7 save opportunities, and providing a power arm that the
A's needed. Also, former closer Arthur Rhodes looks to return soon from
the disabled list with fellow lefty Chris Hammond.
Now that the All-Star break has come and gone, Oakland is poised to make
its push for the playoffs, already having taken 3 of 4 from the White
Sox. When the A's get to full strength, look for them to make their
annual second-half surge.
