My Love for Drill Team

"It brings different people form different backgrounds together to form something creative in the language of dance and drill."

By Amy Saechao

Drill team: not a lot of people know much about this sport, even though it’s popularity is slowly beginning to spread. It’s watched all over the world, although not on national television, and it’s known mostly through word of mouth. I am in love with this activity. It brings different people form different backgrounds together to form something creative in the language of dance and drill.

There are different drill teams all over the United States from the Bay Area to St. Louis, and all the way to New York. Each area has its own individual style. Competitions are also a lot of fun and they give you the opportunity to show off and see the best.

The reason I love the drill team so much is because it allows me to mix my passion for dance in a more organized, military based fashion and is done to the live beating of drums. It also offers a lot of challenges and I’m always up for a challenge.

Drill teams help keep youth, such as myself, off the streets and are meant to prevent youth from making bad choices. Drilling is only for girls, there are plenty of boys involved in different drill teams. The drum lines consist mostly of male drummers, but don’t get me wrong, there are females who can drum too.

Since I was eight years old, I’ve been affiliated with a drill team called F.A.D., which stands for, Find Alternative Directions. The years I’ve been in this drill team, I have seen so many people come in with a bad reputation and a name in the streets, and I’ve seen them leave with a clearer image of themselves as well as a higher respect for themselves and others.

I have seen a few walk away with scholarships from different colleges who caught glimpse of them at different competitions. I have been able to witness the growth and change in drill team styles.

In drilling, I seek out something I truly enjoy. I learned to pick things up quickly and teach others in a clearer form. I think drill team has helped me to build my own personality and confidence. I’ve finally found something I am passionate about, without drill team, I am sure I would not be the same person I am today.
