Baseball Innocence Lost

"Tejada was an Oakland A's fan favorite. Now, thanks to Jason Grimsley, I’m hearing one of my favorite players might have used steroids."

By Nico Savidge

Youth Radio's Nico Savidge reflects on losing his baseball innocence. After last year's controversy over Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig's loose steroid testing policy, yet another scandal has surfaced. This time, it's over Arizona Diamondback Jason Grimsley. Grimsley admitted to using the Human Growth Hormone (HGH), and revealed the names of four players who also took HGH...including Miguel Tejada - A's teammate, and one of Nico's favorite players. Now, Nico must come to terms with what these steroid allegations mean for his love of baseball, and one of his favorite player. (October 29 on KCBS)

I am a baseball purist, and I believe any steroids are terrible and destroy the game.

Jason Grimsley was a pitcher for the Arizona Diamondbacks. He had a mediocre career, but rose to stardom earlier this year when he admitted to using Human Growth Hormone. After the FBI raided his home, he reportedly told the agents the names of four players who he said took HGH. One of them was Miguel Tejada.

From 1997 to 2003, Tejada was an Oakland A's fan favorite. Now, thanks to Jason Grimsley, I’m hearing one of my favorite players might have used steroids. And even though it's just an allegation, it still casts a deep shadow of doubt on Tejada's career with Oakland.

And ultimately, that has been the worst side effect of the Steroid Era of Baseball. No matter who it is, whenever a player does well, or starts breaking records, we immediately wonder: “Is he on the juice?” – even if he's never touched the stuff.
