"Don’t assume anything about anyone until you walk around in their shoes for a couple of days… maybe you would have cheered for Barry Bonds as well."

By Sam Weinstock

Listen to this Commentary!

Last season Barry Bonds broke Hank Aaron’s all-time home run record. Outside of San Francisco, many people questioned whether the record was tainted or not. Youth Radio’s Sam Weinstock thinks people should be less judgmental.

On a summer night that was cold by my standards, along with 40 thousand other people, I was waiting for something amazing to happen. About half way through the game, it did. The baseball soared over the right field wall and the crowd exploded with cheers. Confetti settled onto the field as number 25 exclaimed to millions of fans across the country, “this record is not tainted,” --and in San Francisco it wasn’t. But I flew home to a different world.

For many people in Atlanta, as well as most of the country, Barry Bonds had not broken the home run record. In fact, Hank Aaron still kept the title, as far as any Braves fan was concerned. But I will say that I was shocked that after a 5 hour flight, it was as if I had traveled to another planet.

People share views, whether true or not, based on where they live. Many Americans share the perception that people living in the Middle East are all turban-wearing, gun-toting terrorists. But a personal visit to a country in that region would reveal that most of the Middle East is very peaceful.

Don’t assume anything about anyone until you walk around in their shoes for a couple of days… maybe you would have cheered for Barry Bonds as well.
