Youth Practitioner Summit: Interview with "Dropping In" Cast

On December 3, 2010 the NM Youth Alliance held the 2010 Youth Practitioner Summit. Youth from around New Mexico came together to share their stories with each other and their adult allies. "Dropping In" a production created by youth about barriers that keep students from graduating, was presented at the summit. KUNM Youth Radio Project's Victor Torres interviews Calle Treppiedi, Sal Treppiedi, Jorge Mendoza, and Paola Castillo, members of the cast of "Dropping In". They share in describing how the play came alive and why they created and participated in it.

Early Vote Rally: Interview with Public Enemy's Brian Hardgroove

On October18, 2010 an Early Vote Rally was held on the UNM campus. Students gathered around to listen to several speakers talk about the importance of voting.

The speakers included Lt. Governor Diane Denish, Representative Martin Heinrich, and Brian Hardgroove from Public Enemy. KUNM Youth Radio Project's George Luna-Peña interviews Brian Hardgroove. Future of the Internet Public Hearing: Albuquerque City Councilor Garduño

On November 16, New Mexico Media Literacy Project, The Center for Media Justice and Free Press hosted the Future of the Internet Public Hearing at the National Hispanic Cultural Center in Albuquerque, N.M. Speakers at the hearing shared their insights on the Internet's future. The community was also given time to ask questions on what lies ahead. KUNM Youth Radio Project's George Luna-Peña interviews Albuquerque City Councilor Rey Garduño. City Councilor Garduño shares his thoughts on net neutrality and discusses the importance of the internet for him and his constituents.

National Hispanic Cultural Center's 10th Year Celebration:Veronica Sanchez

On October 10, 2010 the National Hispanic Cultural Center (NHCC) celebrated its ten-year anniversary in Albuquerque, NM with a community open house. NHCC featured local performers, behind the scenes tours, dance classes, hands-on art, and the unveiling of the fresco inside the Torreon. KUNM Youth Radio Project's Sam Kerwin interviews Veronica Sanchez, Community Leader. Sanchez tells us what the NHCC means to her and explains the ways in which the community can support the NHCC.

On September 16, 2010, the U.S. Department of Education held a listening session entitled the National Youth Listening Tour at Central New Mexico Community College in Albuquerque, NM.

Members of the community - including middle school, high school, and college age youth - came to share ideas in part to encourage education reform. KUNM Youth Radio Project's Luke Iha interviews Alberto Retana, the Director of Community Outreach for the U.S. Department of Education. Retana discusses his outlook on the education crisis and his hopes for the future of our education system.

The event took place in Albuquerque, New Mexico on April 10, 2010. In this interview, Iemanja speaks with Gabriella Maestas, a mother of two children, about why she believes that early childhood development is crucial.

Elizabeth Chavez Villarino Speaks at the Cesar Chavez March

On Saturday, March 27th, Elizabeth Chavez Villarino speaks about her father’s legacy outside the National Hispanic Cultural Center. Quoting her father, Elizabeth Chavez states, “You’re never strong enough that you don’t need help,” in order to stress one of Cesar Chavez’ core values: volunteerism. Helping others, in turn, can wind up helping yourself. Cesar Chavez advocated strength in communities through volunteerism and non-violence. He also founded the United Farm Workers, a successful union for the first time in the United States.
