Breaking A Cycle Of Violence

My friends called me outside, and when I got there, I saw them in the car… fighting.

He had her by the hair and was punching her over and over. “Stop him!” said my friends who had gathered outside. “She needs your help!”

He and I are close – we grew up together, and his girlfriend has become a good friend. But even so, for a few seconds, I just stood there and watched. I knew even if I stopped this fight I probably couldn’t stop the fighting. It’s been happening several times a week for over a year now.

It starts with an argument. Then it gets louder. Then there’s pushing, and then somebody swings. He’s broken her nose and more than once put her in the hospital. But it always ends the same way. She goes home for the night, saying she’s finished with him and with the abuse. But by the morning, she’s back at his house, and everything is new again.

Watching this over and over is like watching a painful movie with no ending. But if I were to cast the role of abused girlfriend, she’s the last woman I would choose. When I think of an abused woman, I imagine someone with no self esteem, who needs somebody to make her feel like she’s somebody, who’s always taking others’ opinions as her own.

This young woman is nothing like that. She’s highly educated, not to mention gorgeous. She’s got a good job and is raising her son on her own. She seems extremely confident when she talks to people. And she always tells us that she can do better.

Watching this endless cycle, I ask myself – why would such a strong, beautiful woman keep going back to this abuse? It’s not like she depends on him for money or a place to stay. It’s not like she doesn’t have a life of her own.

But maybe the most important question isn’t ‘why does she stay’ but ‘how can I help her find the courage to leave.’

That’s also not an easy question to answer. I’ve tried talking to her so many times. Watching her come back to him is sad and frustrating. Sometimes it even makes me angry, and I tell myself that it’s her choice to stay with him.

But I remind myself that maybe one day my words will help pull her out of the cycle. And so I keep telling her:

You are beautiful inside and out – and you may not see it, but you are the one with the power because you are the one who can say enough is enough and walk away. And when you do, you will find a community of people who will support you. And you will never be alone.

These commentaries by D.C. area teens are part of a collaboration between WAMU's Youth Voices program, Youth Radio and the Latin American Youth Center.

Hook-Ups Don't Work For Me

Talking to Teens About Sex

Hard Knocks, Good School

A Child's View Of Domestic Violence

The following was originally published on Minnesota Public Radio.

By Valencia McMurray, Minnesota Public Radio.

More than a quarter of American children experience parents physically fighting each other at some time in their lives. Early researchers into family violence often considered children to be "invisible victims", but that view is changing.

MPR reporter Valencia McMurray revisits an incident that happened in her family when she was six and has kept a hold on her family 14 years later.

St. Paul, Minn. -- My story begins Sept. 30, 1997, at 652 Bush in St. Paul. I remember being inside this house. I remember my father standing right here on this porch, almost exactly where I'm standing, banging on the door. He just wanted to talk. She didn't want to listen to him but I feel like she also didn't listen to us. Because we told her, "Don't go outside mom. Please don't go outside, mom."

"I should have listened," said my mom. "But I figured, it's going to be all right. The neighbors are all outside, and I just thought we were going to be safe. But we wasn't."

I remember his eyes were red. He was not himself. He was someone else. There was no love in that man.

"We sat out there and we talked and I told him that we couldn't get back together and I think that's what made him mad," said my mom. "Because when I got up and turned my back to come in the house, that's when he stabbed me and y'all was screaming and hollering."

I remember standing beside my sister inside. The youngest of my brothers was a few feet ahead of me and then the second oldest of my siblings, Jermaine who was 15, was trying to get through the screen door.

"It just looked like he was hitting her and then I saw the streetlights glisten off the blade," said Jermaine. He had to make a split-second decision. "I'm standing in the doorway and I was going to run through the back door and come around front, but I didn't want to do that and then miss something and it'll be the last time I see my mom alive."

My dad stabbed my mom repeatedly. Thirteen times, according to the police report, but my family remembers it was 15.

"I remember feeling the knife go into my neck," said my mom.

That's the only the one she felt. The rest she described as an out-of-body experience, like she was watching from above.

"I remember giving up," she said.

The last thing she remembers is the picture of the four of us kids screaming and crying.

"I remember that I saw y'all face and I couldn't give up," she said. "I kept saying 'who's going to take care of y'all if I give up?'"

Jermaine pushed his way out onto the porch to defend our mom and my dad stabbed him in the back. My mom managed to call 911 and my dad fled.

"My mom's laying on the porch, bleeding to death," said Jermaine. "And she's trying to talk to 911 and they're asking her questions."

He couldn't stand it: "I left my little sisters and brother with the neighbor and I told the police officers, 'If you don't catch him before I do, I'm killing the bastard.'"

Jermaine said he walked around St. Paul for three days with a brick in his hand.

"And I was on my way back to his house and my aunt called, and said the police just picked him up at his house," Jermaine said.

THE AFTERMATH

My dad spent 11 years in prison for trying to kill my mom. We had no contact with him.

Meanwhile, our family's life was a blur of moving to different states. My mom was too paranoid to live in any one place. My siblings and I never talked about that night we almost lost our mom. It wasn't until I turned 18 that I dared to look back at what happened and think about how it affected me.

Reading the police and court reports about that night in 1997, my sister and brothers and I are like background figures.

    From the police report:

Squad 332, Officer McPeak was leaving East Team. I was approached by a hysterical young black male, later identified as Miller Jermaine Johnson. I then arrived on scene. There were several people standing on the porch. Children were crying hysterically. I asked that the children be taken away from the scene. I kneeled down and attempted to interview her as to what happened...

I asked my mom how she remembers us.

"Nobody really ever asked me 'How are the kids doing?' she said. "And you know, I think about that all the time, 'How did that affect y'all?' Because when y'all was little and when it happened, I was trying to get you to therapy to talk to someone, wouldn't none of y'all go. Everyone was so angry, but no one ever told me how they felt about anything."

She's right. Until this interview, I hadn't talked to her about it.

I avoided those emotions and thought this was in the past.

WHAT ABOUT THE CHILDREN?

Jeffrey Edleson, directer of the Minnesota Center against Violence and Abuse at the University of Minnesota, said this isn't unusual at all. Edleson is an expert on how domestic violence affects kids. He said it's a relatively new phenomenon to look at the long-term effects on kids.

"It's only 25 to 30 years ago that we started to even mention the kids," said Edleson. "It's only in the last 10 to 15 years that a lot of attention has been given to kids. So I think we're just at a starting point of responding to kids exposed to domestic violence."

Edleson said kids who grew up with parents physically fighting each other are two to three times more likely to use violence in their own relationships, or become victims. That was certainly true in my case.

As a kid, I got into many fights with others. I was a bully. I remember this kid, David. All I remember is my first punch. Then, I blacked out. That scared me. "I'm just like my dad," I thought. I made a decision right then, at 12 years old, to stop fighting and I haven't since.

It doesn't seem like my siblings have done the same. My mom has also noticed too.

"I guess the boys do got a lot of anger," she said. "And it upsets me that they do the things that they saw done to me. It really bothers me."

It really bothers me too. I don't want my nieces and nephews to see things I've seen, or to think violence is how you solve problems. Edleson said all men have the ability to change. The will to change will come and go depending on pressures from outside.

"It's learned, and it can be unlearned and new ways can be learned and that's the one thing I'm really optimistic about," said Edleson.

According to Edleson, education and treatment can help offenders end their violent behavior, and the entire community needs to give clear and consistent messages that violence is not OK.

"I've seen lots of people in the work that I did with men who batter. A lot of men change, and make big changes in their lives," said Edleson.

My dad walked back into my life on my 18th birthday. The courts had prevented him from contacting me until then. He called me up from his home in Wisconsin, and it was clear, the only thing that had changed was time.

I was really mad because I couldn't understand how he thought we could start talking like nothing happened and like it wasn't a big deal. He didn't seem to think about how that one night has affected my whole life up to this point and is continually affecting the way I see men.

His reply: "Well, that's the way I was raised. I was raised in violence."

This made me angrier, because if you understand how badly something has ripped holes in your heart and your life, why would you put that same burden on those you claim to love? Wouldn't you want to stop that cycle and keep your kids from that? I told him I lost him. I almost lost my mom.

And if I could give up violence, he could too.

I'm still waiting.

Fall Back, Chris Brown, Fall Back!

Chris Brown's first interview since he beat up Rihanna, will air this Wednesday night on Larry King Live. America is eager to hear from the R&B stars mouth exactly three things: "W! T! F!" Judging from a preview of the interview with the 20-year old Brown sandwiched between his mother Joyce Hawkins and lawyer Mark Geragos, it looks like he's not going to offer up any real explanation. We will get to hear exactly what type of emotional trauma from his childhood (which his mother should expound upon) led up to what his loved ones call "strange behavior".

But, honestly, who cares about that? The real question at hand is: can he come back from this devastating blow to his "good boy" image and maintain a career as an entertainer? Pop culture history gives us some examples to look at here.

Chris Brown on Larry King Live.

In the midst of child pornography charges R. Kelly made "Tapped in the Closet". A comical R&B opera series that became one of his most popular works since "I Believe I Can Fly". The only difference is unlike Brown, Kells didn't plead guilty to his charge (even though many of us still believe he did it) and was pronounced innocent.

The King of Pop, rest in peace, faced charges of molestation and kiddie-porn. Yet on a whim he could sell out an arena anywhere in the world because he is The King Of Pop. Well, he pleaded not guilty and won too.

So. There is something to be said about the whole "not guilty" verdict that helps with public perception. Or does it?

Rapper/Actor Tupac Shakur was a convicted sex offender who spent almost a year in prison. While incarcerated sales of his album "Me Against The World" flourished, making 2Pac the only artist ever to have an album at number one on the Billboard charts while serving a prison sentence. After he was released from prison he made some of his most celebrated and often remixed Death Row recordings.

This is the reality Chris is going to have to face. He can woo the girls but he can't write hits like R. Kelly, He can dance his ass off but he doesn't have the adoration of a king (not even a prince). And, yes, he has some amount of a hard edge but his voice and music isn't as heart wrenchingly powerful as Tupac's was.

This is not to say that he can never achieve some of those goals if he wants. But I'm not sure how loyal his primary fan base of teenyboppers will be after a scandal like this. I mean think about the media darling Rihanna is! She was groomed for pop icon status by Jay-Z himself while Brown has yet to have a #1 song on the pop charts.

Quick history lesson again. Whitney Houston and Bobby Brown. Extremely famous female singer falls in love with R&B star, everything's good. Then the world sees their domestic issues. Mary J Blige and K-Ci is another example. Rihanna simply learned much faster than her predecessor Whitney Houston who after a dysfunctional relationship, drug abuse, and a reality TV stint, FINALLY calls it quits with Bobby Brown and is clawing her way back into the spotlight she once commanded. Rihanna's next record is going to be a woman scorn survivor pop sensation and it is bound to only increase her fan base.

So Chris if you’re reading this, take my advise; FALL BACK! You already have lots of money (or should). Enjoy the rest of your youth. Go to school. Just don't keep making autotune drenched "I'm sorry" songs because unless she takes you back, you kind of look like a crazy ex-boyfriend. FALL BACK…a little more… right next to Lil Romeo and Sammie. There you go. Perfect.

Previously:

Chris Brown Pleads Guilty

New View On Chris Brown [Commentary]

Teens Still Support Chris Brown

Murdered By An Ex

According to the San Francisco chronicle, on the evening of July 19th, Eustacio Torres was shot by his ex-girlfriend at a converted garage that Torres was renovating. Torres and his girlfriend, Bernadette Agustin, met about five years ago when Torres was renovating her house. They became partners in that business for a few years. The market started to tumble downhill, and their buildings went into foreclosure causing them to lose money. This caused tension between the couple. After some time, their relationship started to become difficult for both of them. Torres realized that Agustin was dangerous; however he never got a restraining order against her. On the evening on July 19th Agustin went to meet Torres at the garage. Prior to this incident she bought a pistol. She brought shot him with it.
About a year ago Eustacio Torres’ sister, Catalina Torres, a volunteer for a battered women’s group, was shot and killed inside of her Martinez apartment while trying to protect one of her customers in a beauty salon.
Her customer’s husband, Felix Sandoval, entered the beauty salon raged at his wife who had a restraining order against him. Catalina and her customer jetted out of the beauty salon. Sandoval couldn’t find his wife so he followed Torres to her apartment and shot her in the head, simply because she was affiliated with the incident. He then shot at the door and hit Sgt. Paul Starzyk. He still busted in and shot and killed Sandoval.
Since these two murders are a year apart and both victims come from the same family, the Torres family is suffering deeply from these two tragedies.
It is sad, yet ironic how both tragedies happened in the way that they did. They were related and both incidents happened a year apart. Considering the fact that Eustacio, Catalina’s brother had to help bury her, it is sad that he got killed also. They both worked together in a domestic violence group together. Now the Torres family has lost two of their family members to similar incidents.

Bay Area Man Arrested After Bridge Shootings

On Tuesday a transit worker and toll collector were shot and killed at the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge. Arrested earlier today was 46 year-old Nathan Burris. Burris was the boyfriend of 51 year-old Debbie Ross—the toll collector killed—also killed was 58 year old Ersie Everett. Burris was arrested in the Sierra Mountains after a statewide bulletin for his capture was issued.

Police do not have a motive as to why Everett was killed just yet but did acknowledge that Richmond police responded on Sunday to the home Burris and Ross shared to a domestic violence call. Neighbors interviewed by the ANG newspapers said that Burris was a “nice and cordial guy”, they also noted that the couple were facing economic and health problems as of late.

Domestic violence is hard to ignore, according to American Bar Association, 1.3 million women are physically assaulted a year. That’s hard to fathom but the issue stands, we need to combat these issues and figure out ways to resolve these issues.

Youth Radio partner site Boss Of Me focuses on teen dating violence prevention.

Previously:

Dating Violence Takes Over Talk Shows

Wearing Jeans to Raise Awareness [Now With Video]

Youth React to Alleged Rihanna Assault

Boss of Me

Boss of Me (BOM Inc.) wants young people to know that they are, and should always be, the boss of themselves, especially in their relationships. They are responsible for their own choices, actions and reactions (your partner might make you mad but they cannot make you hit or disrespect them). No one else can tell them what they can or should be doing, where they can and can't be, who they can or can't see, how they can (or can't) dress, etc. The website has games, videos, resources and information to help young people measure how healthy their or their friends' relationship is and what they can do to make, or keep, it healthy and positive.

TEACH YOUTH RADIO: Domestic Violence

News Break:

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

What's the story?

Chandra Touch approaches a topic that is not often discussed around a dinner table much less in a classroom. In this month’s News Break, she delves into a situation of domestic violence that her family experienced while she was a child. She exhibits much courage in sharing this story, as she recounts how she and her mother dealt with the violent tendencies of her mom’s ex-boyfriend.

For more than a year, Youth Radio has been promoting awareness of domestic and dating violence. Two Youth Radio grads and current staff members, Stephanie Martija and Surmiche Vaughn, co-founded a group called, Ladies Overcoming Violence Everyday (L.O.V.E.). Chandra’s story brings the power of a personal narrative to the L.O.V.E group’s efforts. Drawing on health research and practice, the group describes domestic violence as a chronic abuse by one current or former intimate partner against another. It is characterized by a pattern of coercive control and increasing entrapment.

Chandra’s story is a co-production of Blunt Radio, in Portland, Maine, and Youth Radio.

Stephanie and Surmiche helped tremendously in putting together this News Break.

Read this Script!
Listen to this Commentary!

Teach this News Break!

SCRIPT

PRINT

Domestic Violence
" My mom let out a loud scream but it was suddenly muffled by his hands. "
By Chandra Touch

Youth Radio's Chandra Touch experienced domestic violence at a young age when her mother’s then boyfriend terrorized her family. Chandra’s story is a co-production of Blunt Radio, in Portland, Maine, and Youth Radio. (November 1st on KQED)

A loud bang came from the front door. He was back again. My mom told him to go away. He just angrily told her “NO,” and repeated those three little words: “I LOVE YOU.” I never understood that kind of love. I love my Mom, my rabbit and my friends. But my rabbit never attacked me with his paws, my mom never called me a slut, and my friends never really made me cry.

I heard the bolt lock come undone and my body froze. My mom let out a loud scream but it was suddenly muffled by his hands. “I LOVE YOU,” he said again as he smashed her body against the wall. I didn’t have to see it with my own eyes. The framed picture of Big Bird rattling on my wall explained it all.

I wanted to cry, but I was afraid he would hear me. Just like he heard me the last time. That time my mom tried to calm me down but I couldn’t. He pulled the orange extension cord from the power socket and headed towards me. Four strikes with the orange extension cord. Those whips hurt more than my bike scrapes.

This time I cried quietly as I tiptoed to my desk and grabbed the phone. My chubby fingers dialed 911. Within minutes I saw the blue lights outside my window and heard the siren. There I stood, phone in my hand, next to my Care Bear night light.

It’s been twelve years since I’ve seen the guy with the orange extension cord. But he wasn’t the last man to commit violence against my family.

They say people learn from their mistakes, but I’ve already learned from the mistakes of mom, my aunts, and my sister. I’ve loved cautiously, with one foot out the door, careful never to let a man overpower me. And I’m working hard to keep the promise I made to my mom - never to end up like her.

TEACH YOUTH RADIO

Use the script and audio of the commentary in this Newsbreak to inspire students to explore these skills and themes:

Language Arts:
• Explore literary tools, including flashbacks and evocative imagery.
• Debate the unequal distribution of resources for communities facing various kinds of health crises.
Social Science:
• Examine effects on individuals, communities and society of economic disparity in a democracy.
Health:
• Analyze cycles of violence.
• Define “healthy” relationships.
xamine issues of violence in LGBTQ community.

For this month's feature, you can access to these strategies and resources:
  1.	Ideas and Suggestions for lesson plans
  2.	Toolbox handouts
  3.	Synthesized Standards
  4.	Reporter Bios
  5.	Resources and further research
  6.	Youth Radio’s media production techniques

1. IDEAS AND SUGGESTIONS FOR LESSON PLANS:

LISTENING WARM UP:
Back in the day: Have students listen to Chandra’s story and highlight or underline the phrases and images that evoke childhood. To what extent do your students relate to these images? What is the effect of juxtaposing these “innocent” images with the events Chandra describes? What images would your students use to invoke their own childhoods?

LANGUAGE ARTS:
Sensory Introductions: Capturing readers’ attention is one of the initial challenges any writer faces. Chandra grabs attention immediately by using a sound and right away linking it to a character: “A loud bang came from the front door. He was back again.” Have students experiment with this same technique, by free-writing a series of introductory sentences that draw a reader in first by sound, then through other sensory stimuli: a smell, a taste, a touch, a sight. Have them explore how these sensory details not only hook readers but also serve to introduce key characters.

Flashbacks: How does Chandra use the method of flashback in this piece? How does time pass in her story? Work through the narrative with students to reveal how time can be non-linear in creative writing. Then you can have your students write about a time in their own childhoods that they remember vividly because of a life lesson that it taught them, a time when they were both young and grown.

In conclusion: If students only heard the last part of this commentary, they might notice that it reads almost like a spoken word piece. Near the end of her story, Chandra shifts into a different narrative rhythm. How do her succinct phrases create a profound conclusion to her story? Students can practice using this same method in writing their own personal stories. You might use Chandra’s piece to get students thinking about how to vary sentence structure, pacing, and tone to match the mood they aim to convey at various points within their stories.

Pushing genres: Chandra wrote this story for radio-a medium with its own genres (e.g., the news report, the commentary, etc.) and narrative standards (e.g., conversational writing, a sense of character and arc). In school classrooms, young writers sometimes have to work within a different set of standards -especially the “five paragraph essay”- which includes an introduction, three explanatory/evidentiary paragraphs, and a conclusion (see, for example, The Five Paragraph Essay). If Chandra were to write this story as a five-paragraph essay, how could it be outlined? What would it look like? What, if anything, would be gained, using the five-paragraph format? What, if anything, would be lost? For those who want to take it farther, the following is a critique of the five-paragraph essay: Going Beyond the Five-Paragraph Essay. You might ask your students to brainstorm ways to write distinctively, and with personal meaning, inside a five-paragraph essay format.

SOCIAL SCIENCE:
Inequity, Community & Culture: In Chandra’s story, her phone call to 911 was a huge turning point. It was only after that call that her mom’s boyfriend became, “the guy that never came back.” Calling 911 doesn’t always have that effect. The rap group Public Enemy has a song called “911 is a Joke,” which decries the fact that in some neighborhoods, the police are slow to respond to calls for help: ”Hit me/Going, going, gone/Now I dialed 911 a long time ago/Don't you see how late they're reactin'/They only come and they come when they wanna/So get the morgue embalm the goner.” Have students do research to determine whether there are differences in 911 response times and rates for various neighborhoods around where they live or go to school. Why is it that in some communities, calling the police is not a viable solution to their problems? What is the relationship between neglect and abuse by intimate partners, and neglect and abuse at the hands of the police? (see, for example, Human Rights Watch and visit the power and control wheel also recommended below: Power and Control Wheel).

War and domestic violence: Experiencing or witnessing cycles of domestic violence can be linked to Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, or PTSD. In previous News Breaks, we have highlighted stories of young soldiers come home from the Iraq war with PTSD ( PTSD, and see also Depression after Combat. PTSD was also in the news recently when the San Francisco Chronicle drew attention to child trauma research suggesting that “as many as one-third of children living in our country’s violent urban neighborhoods have PTSD- nearly twice the rate reported for troops returning from war zones in Iraq.” (see: Children who survive urban warfare suffer from PTSD, too ). Have students find out the defining features and symptoms of PTSD? What are the short and long term effects on these young people, their communities and American society? In a democracy, what resources and services are available to help those struggling now and prevent more from suffering trauma in the future?

HEALTH:
Cycle of violence: The following site offers a description of the cycle of violence in abusive relationships: Cycle of Violence, which includes the tension-building phase, the abusive/release of stress phase, and the “honeymoon” phase, where the abuser can become “tender and apologetic.” Students can write scripts to act out each of these stages. As they watch the skits in class, have students analyze the assailant and the victim’s characters and actions. Have students do research (e.g., interviewing mental health professionals, reviewing printed materials from local health providers) about what individuals can do if they find themselves caught inside a cycle of domestic violence.

Power control wheel: The National Center of Domestic and Sexual Violence has created a wheel, Power and Control Wheel, that serves as a reference for how a batterer maintains control over his/her partner. Youth Radio’s L.O.V.E. group uses this wheel in their workshops and communications about dating and domestic violence. Notably, some of the actions are precursors to violence and signs that can indicate an unhealthy relationship. How can this wheel be re-written to reflect power and control over one’s own life?

Healthy relationships: By looking at signs of unhealthy relationships, students can brainstorm what a healthy, positive relationship looks and emotionally feels like.
