Turnstyle, a project of Youth Radio's production company Youth Media International, is an online information service powered by creative, culturally diverse young adults (18-34) serving as producers, reporters, writers, and engaged audiences.
Turnstyle delivers a mix of news, opinion, commentary, and entertainment produced by bloggers, filmmakers, photographers, and poets. It's distinctive content packaged the way younger audiences want it, with a focus on quality and high journalistic standards.
Turnstyle is being syndicated to public media and commercial outlets, and aggregated at its website www.turnstylenews.com. We are determined to deliver content that bridges commercial media and public media. One minute you'll hear us on NPR's Morning Edition and the next minute you'll be redirected to our hub through Boing Boing or Gawker.
A Focus on Talent
Turnstyle Managing Editor Alejandro De La Cruz says the service is dedicated to surfacing talent, “Turnstyle's strength is its diversity of contributors. From hip-hop artists taking us through their creative process, Iraqi-American filmmakers visiting a war-torn nation, to advanced documentary footage of one of the greatest punk bands of all time, we aim to bring the best emerging talent in media today.”
Partners
Youth Speaks, the nation's leading producer and provider of spoken word performance and education, is collaborating with Youth Media International to identify key talent for Turnstyle through Youth Speaks’ network of poets. Through this partnership, Youth Speaks’ award-winning talent pool of poet-storytellers contribute co-branded features with a contagious new sound and style.
Youth Media International teamed up with the creators of BoingBoing.net – one of the most popular blogs on the Internet - to create the Turnstyle website. Turnstylenews.com was created by Boing Boing Managing Editor Rob Beschizza.
Youth Media International is also collaborating with PRX, the Public Radio Exchange, REMIX radio and selected public radio stations to develop the service for the entire public media system.
Funded in part by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, Turnstyle creates public media for a new generation, and creates a new generation for public media, through distribution to public media stations and networks such as NPR. That's in addition to distribution via social media, mobile platforms, and other content partners.
